Have you ever had a big bill come in, for your car or electricity, or a couple of bills all at once? For some people paying their bill means they then can’t afford food. We often don’t know who could be struggling. For those in Murrindindi who have ever experienced not being able to afford food there are support services available. The four ‘community’ houses; Alexandra Community Hub, Kinglake Neighborhood House, Flowerdale and Yea Community Houses all have food available during their opening hours as well as some other support services throughout our shire.
Murrindindi statistics show that 14% of people in Murrindindi have not been able to afford food at some time over the last year. This is more than state average of 5%. As part of a community leadership project, members from the Rivers and Ranges Community Leadership program have created a website Food4U.org.au with all the details of what’s available to people who can’t afford food. There’s also a link to food2share.org.au to see how you might be able to help people in our community who are struggling.
If you know someone who might be doing it ‘tough’, encourage them to call or drop in to any of the centres, or if you are interested in donating any food, please check out the website to see various options, and call up the House to find out what they need more of.
